Despicable Me 2

Minions Rule! Oh yeah they do. There is no denying that the success of the first Despicable Me was primarily because of the cuteness and craziness that those lovely yellow Minions brought about in the story. I'm a grown man (admittedly my family might disagree with that) and I simply fell in love with them. Well, the same fun and clumsiness continues in the second instalment of the film as Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) takes on to becoming a “spy” of sorts helping the right side of the law for a change and amidst all the madness even falls in love.

Despicable Me 2 scores with the kids, and adults alike, because of the more physical, slapstick like comedy that is brought about by the Minions. It does lack a tad in the story department with a villain that isn't menacing enough and a number of characters that just aren't used to their full potential keeping the focus primarily on Gru, his lady love Lucy, occasionally the three girls, and the Minions.

Even though there are a number of laugh-out-loud moments, thanks primarily to the Minions, Despicable Me 2 isn't as funny as some of the animation comedies out there. The Minions return for the second time with similar antics as the first film, but I'm glad to say that they sustain their charm and I'm more than looking forward to a movie featuring primarily them in the starring role.

The 3D once again proved to be unnecessary, adding absolutely no value to the film, aside for maybe twice when it does feel like objects popped out of the screen. I might sound like a broken record with my rant against 3D in each film I watch, but then again when I am "forced" to watch a film in 3D and "forced" to pay for 3D glasses that I don't want or use, so I simply can't help it. In fact, although my daughter doesn't clarify properly in the video below, but she did actually say that the film didn't even feel like it was in 3D.

For a more light-hearted 2 minute review, click on the video and listen to what my daughter thought of the film.

Despicable Me 2 is a lovely little addition to what now is a sure-shot franchise. While it may lack the heart that the first film had in abundance, it nevertheless doesn't fail to entertain.

Watch it for the Minions.
